Spine and disc injuries are more common in individuals who lie in the 40 to 60 age bracket. While young individuals who engage in different strenuous work activities (which involve the lifting of heavy loads and operating on machinery for long hours) experience spine, neck and disc injuries which cause great pain. These injuries cause hindrance in the movement of the back and the neck, and are aggravated by continuous involvement in different laborious activities. Spinal disc herniation is a medical condition experienced by individuals because of over-exertion on the back and neck parts of the body. Chiropractors offer different treatment methods to relieve the pain and facilitate movement of the affected individual.
What Is Spinal Disc Herniation?
Spinal disc herniation is a medical condition in which a tear appears on the outer fibrous layer of the vertebra disc, which causes the inner soft nucleus material to bulge and squeeze out from the torn area of the disc.
The tear in the disc is usually attributed to old age in individuals, but may also be caused because of any trauma, straining and lifting injuries, experienced by a young individual, because of different work related and other everyday activities. The nature of the tear in the disc might cause inflammation in the surrounding area, which might put pressure on the nerves, resulting in pain for the individual. The bulging out of the inner pulpous material from the ruptured or torn disc results in a pressure on the spine and disc which causes extreme pain.
Spinal disc herniation is also called a slipped disc condition, though the disc is securely intact in between the vertebra. Individuals suffering from a minor case of spinal disc herniation are able to recover within a few weeks, with suitable rest. But, in cases of extreme damage to the spinal disc, the patient sometimes requires surgical treatment, which does not always provide good results.
Patients with acute spinal disc herniation in the upper, central or lower part of their spinal cord require physical therapy and medications for quick recovery.
Chiropractic Therapy for Spinal Disc Injuries
Chiropractors provide treatment and therapy for the effective recovery of individuals suffering from different forms of spine and disc injuries. They mobilize and manipulate the muscles of the spine and the neck, adjusting the different joints and muscles, to relieve the individual of the excruciating pain experienced because of the different musculoskeletal disorders
A chiropractor will advise a scoliosis patient to follow a specific type of diet. Scoliosis is a medical condition in which the spine bends to one side. The lower part of the spine is the most common area in which the condition occurs.
The condition is more prevalent in girls rather than boys and usually happens during puberty when the child experiences a growth spurt. Back specialists recommend an adequate amount of nutrition for children who suffer from the condition. The diet is meant to increase bone mass.
Since the condition is hereditary a proper diet might not prevent the onset of scoliosis. However foods that support bone mass are likely to prevent osteoporosis. In fact, according to the University of Washington Department of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine osteoporosis can actually worsen scoliosis since it can worsen the curve of the spine when the child reaches adulthood.
If your child suffers from scoliosis it is best that you enrich his/her diet with foods that contain vitamin D and Calcium. Not only do they increase bone mass, they also prevent osteoporosis.
Calcium
Children who suffer from scoliosis are recommended to consume between 1200 to 1500mg of calcium on a daily basis. Just make sure that any low fat sources of calcium do not contain high levels of saturated fats. For example, such a diet should contain food items such as skim cheese or yogurt.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D helps a person’s body absorb calcium. This is also why your mom nagged you about consuming milk on a daily basis. It is packed with the nutrient. Other sources of Vitamin D include saltwater fish, eggs, cod liver oil and cereal.
The nutrient phosphorous is also responsible for bone growth. The human body also uses phosphorus to maintain a healthy level of vitamin D and encourage proper absorption of calcium.
Vitamin E
Vitamin D and calcium aren’t the only nutrients that can prevent a case of scoliosis from getting worse. After all, a child who suffers from the condition will also need a healthy dose of Vitamin E everyday to build strong muscles to support a compromised spine.
Some of the best sources of the nutrient include liver walnuts, almonds, mayonnaise, sunflower seeds, hazelnuts, safflower oil, olive oil and others.
Remember a child who suffers from scoliosis needs a diet that prevents his/her condition from getting worse especially after puberty
What makes Americans happy? Do we even know? When was the last time you even wondered about your level of happiness? Unless we make time to evaluate our levels of satisfaction in life, we move from moment to moment, year to year without noticing whether we are happy or not. Here are a few simple techniques that can improve your mood, your levels of happiness, and your overall mental health:
1. Start Saving $$$ – Financial concerns often top the list of problems. By addressing them, you can help yourself to feel more secure about your future, confident about your ability to pay your bills on time, and in control of your spending. It’s never too early to start. Begin by saving just a small amount from every single paycheck. Some employers offer automatic deposit into a variety of accounts. By having additional savings you face a more stable future where you don’t have to worry about where the money is going to come from for essential expenses.
2. Hold Meaningful Conversations with People – Recently I made a point to eavesdrop at a restaurant for the purpose of discovering what kind of conversations people had. To my surprise, many people didn’t seem to know what having a meaningful conversation meant. One would start out talking about a topic that meant something to the. When they paused, their dining partner responded. Only they didn’t respond to the topic initiated by the first speaker. Instead, they introduced a brand new topic that had meaning to them. Back and forth it went, like a tennis match, but without any meaningful exchange of ideas. They were talking to talk, but neither one listened to the other. Having meaningful conversations really improves our mental health and builds strong relationships. Notice your next conversations and see how meaningful a stranger might find it.
3. Stop Procrastinating – It sounds so easy. Two simple little words, and yet one of the most difficult tasks in the world. Procrastination keeps us from reaching our full potential. And we give ourselves all kinds of excuses for continuing to procrastinate, which makes the problem even worse. The best way to change this tendency is to break the task down into steps and identify the smallest step you can take that would have an effect on whatever task you have been avoiding. Once you do you will eliminate feelings of guilt, you’ll reduce your stress and improve your self esteem. The hardest part of any task is starting. Once you start, maintaining the momentum becomes easier and easier.
4. Glass Half Full or Half Empty – If you can be more positive about everything in your life, you will be much happier and have greater feelings of satisfaction with regard to your life. Most people are pessimistic and see the glass as half empty. This is often due to how we have been raised, but the good news is that you can change. Just decide to be more positive within reason. Being overly positive in times of tragedy or sadness is not only inappropriate, but can have adverse effects on the situation.
